Technical Nikon D200, 1/60 sec, f4.8, ISO 100, focal length 62

Direct flash. Very noticeable shadow. Strong catch lights. The shirt is overexposed. The Nikon flash does a decent job on the skin tones. Some of my other flashes tend to overexpose. This camera and flash combination tends to underexpose. Know your stuff. The fix? Move away from the wall. The shadow will fall away. Bounce – it will soften the shadows. Throw a little light back with a reflector. If your flash doesn’t have this, tape or rubber band an index card to the flash head. Just a little light will make a difference and reduce the shadows under the eyes.
